From San Jose:
Drive 2 - 2.5 hours west to Puntarenas.
Take the car ferry to Paquera (not Playa Naranjo!)
The current schedule is here.NOTE: YOU SHOULD ARRIVE AT LEAST 30 MINUTES PRIOR TO FERRY DEPARTURE TIME, IF NOT ONE HOUR, IN ORDER TO ENSURE ENTRY ONTO THE FERRY.
Tambor II is the older ferry and Tambor III is the newer bigger ferry. The ferry schedule can be changeable. The car ferry takes approximately 1 hour.
NOTE: When you arrive in Puntarenas, go all the way to the end and get into the line of cars waiting for the ferry. Wait for the man with the "ficha", which is a slip of paper that is handed out by the staff of the ferry to all the cars that will fit. Only people with a "ficha" will be sold tickets, which are only sold at the ticket counter. Do not give money to anyone walking along the line.
From Paquera, follow the paved road to Cobano. In the center of Cobano, you will see a bank (Banco Nacional) on the near left corner at the main intersection. Take a left here onto the road to Montezuma. After about 3 seconds you will pass the Pali and the Mega Super (supermarkets) on your right. This is where we recommend buying supplies. Continue on this road for about 7 minutes (or anyway about 6 km since road conditions will dramatically affect your travel time) until it becomes paved again (yes, you lose the pavement outside of Cobano) and you see the Cabinas Three Monkeys on your left. Take the right directly across the street into the entrance to Agua Vista.
Continue down this scenic road for approximately half a mile (1.3 km) Along the way you will pass an entrance on your right with electric meters, bear to the left. At the open steel gates, you will go down and then up steeply, then bear around to the right. When you reach the point where there is another steep incline and a sign saying Agua Vista, you will have arrived. Then, just follow the signs to "Recepcion".
Shuttle Information:
You can also take an overland shuttle bus, run through various tour companies which will shepherd you from San Jose to Montezuma. Cost varies ~ $45. Please contact us for information and/or to book transportation for you.
Flight Information:
Additionally, there are domestic flights operated from San Jose to Tambor with either Sansa or Nature Air. The flight takes approximately 25 minutes, and flights are scheduled during daylight only since the airstrip in Tambor has no lights (yet!)
Rental Car Information:
There are three car rental agencies in this area. Budget and Toyota are in Tambor and Alamo is in Mal País. We recommend Budget, but any company provides pick up and drop off service at the airport in Tambor or to Agua Vista.
Roads around here can be... challenging, particularly during the rainy season (May - November), so 4WD is highly recommended.
